Indies United Publishing House Announces Winners of Small Bites Short Story Contest

QUINCY, IL, March 1, 2024 — Indies United Publishing House, is proud to announce the winners of its Small Bites Short Story Contest. The contest, which ran from November 1, 2023 to January 31, 2024, inviting writers to submit original short stories of up to 5,000 words in any genre. The contest received entries from across the country, showcasing a diverse range of voices and styles. A panel of judges selected the winners based on criteria such as creativity, originality, craft, and impact.


The winners are:

Grand Prize: D. Krauss for his urban fantasy story, Second Star to the Right.

Second Place: Donald Firesmith for his science fiction story, The Manikin.

Third Place: Lisa Reifsnider for her paranormal story, The Restoration of Mary Robinson.


Honorable Mentions: Michael Deeze Little Black Book, David Hagerty The Convict Code, T.E. MacArthur What Waited Under the Stairs. Michael Cooper What Burns Inside the Sunrise. J.W. Bell The Voice.


The winners have received cash prizes, digital award medallions, downloadable award certificates, and the opportunity to have their stories published in an anthology by Indies United. The Grand Prize winner will also receive a featured spot in the anthology title. In addition, all winners and honorees are invited to attend the Author Retreat Weekend and Awards Dinner, hosted by Indies United. The event will include networking opportunities, workshops, public book readings, and an awards ceremony.

The anthology, titled “Second Star to the Right and other short bite stories”, will be available for purchase in print and digital formats in June 2024. It will be registered with the Library of Congress and distributed to various platforms and retailers.
